COMPREHENSIVE THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS INCLUDING MIRADRY AND BOTOX

Dr. William Ting has been a key opinion leader in the Bay Area and Northern California in the area of excess sweating or hyperhidrosis. As a board-certified dermatologist, he has a keen interest in offering comprehensive therapeutic options for hyperhidrosis since year 2000. He is proud to introduce the first and only miraDry (FDA-approved noninvasive electromagnetic wave technology for treatment of underarm hyperhidrosis) in the East Bay. In addition, Dr. Ting is one of the first dermatologic surgeons in the nation to perform the revolutionary SideLaze sweat gland laser ablation. Dr. Ting directs a center of clinical excellence in treating excess sweating disorder by offering:

  • Topical prescription-strengths treatment such as aluminum chloride solution, tannic acid soak
  • Oral prescription of glycopyrrolate (or clonidine in resistant cases)
  • Botulinum injection to achieve denervation of sweat glands lasting 4-8 months in axillae, palms, feet, forehead and scalp
  • The miraDry procedure, revolutionary FDA-approved system to provide lasting noninvasive solution for excess underarm sweating
  • Dr. Ting specifically recommends against surgical approach such as Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) or Endoscopic Lumbar Sympathectomy (ELS) because the risk of eventual compensatory hyperhidrosis is nearly 100% where previously unaffected anatomic areas such as the face, groin, or back may develop excess sweating

It is estimated that up to 20% of people have some degree of excess sweating. Furthermore, hyperhidrosis is a life altering daily struggle for 3% of the US population, and can interfere with nearly every aspect of life. Whether it’s anxiety at work, embarrassment in relationships and social settings, or frustration over constantly ruining clothes, excessive sweating can have devastating effects on a person’s emotional well-being and self-image. In particular, women and men find themselves restricted to dark-colored blouse and shirts to camouflage axillary hyperhidrosis.

In fact, when asked to rate how embarrassing certain conditions were, people rated underarm sweat as more embarrassing than being overweight, having acne, cold sores or dandruff. Unfortunately and sadly enough, many people perceive those who excessively sweat to be nervous, unhealthy or out of shape.

PHYSIOLOGY OF HYPERHIDROSIS

For those who suffer from excess sweating, their sweat glands are overactive – producing much more sweat than is needed to cool the body. It is likely that patients with hyperhidrosis have their body’s thermostat (which is located in hypothalamus) set at a lower temperature point than most people who are not affected with excess sweating. There are two types of sweat glands, locating just below the surface of the skin, and they work by secreting fluid to help cool the body. The eccrine glands secrete a clear, odorless fluid that helps the body control its temperature, while the apocrine glands produce a thicker fluid that gives underarm sweat its distinctive odor. Sometimes overly active apocrine sweat glands can lead to bromohidrosis, or smelly sweat. Patients who suffer from hyperhidrosis may have sweat glands that produce four or five times more sweat than is normal.

MIRADRY

““It has been two months since my procedure, and my underarms are no longer sweaty!” – Susan

WHY CHOOSE THIS FDA-CLEARED, PERMANENT REDUCTION OF EXCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING?

  • Non-surgical treatment for sweating and hyperhidrosis
  • Provides dramatic reduction of underarm sweat – 82% reduction in two sessions, though many patients are satisfied with their results after just one
  • Delivers permanent results
  • Has minimal to no downtime
  • Can be performed on an outpatient basis in our office

MiraDry treatment

The miraDry Procedure uses the only medical device that provides a truly lasting, non-invasive, and effective solution to reduce excessive underarm sweating. The non-surgical and toxin-free miraDry system delivers precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the dermal region where sweat glands reside. The heat generated results in thermolysis of overactive sweat glands, eliminating them for good. Because sweat glands do not regenerate, you can expect dramatic and permanent results. A continuous hydro-ceramic cooling system protects the superficial dermis, and keeps heat at the level of the sweat glands, so there is minimal to no downtime after this procedure.

MiraDry

THE SCIENCE BEHIND MIRADRY

The miraDry System creates a treatment layer at the level of the sweat
glands and a protective cooling layer. A continuous hydro-ceramic cooling system protects the superficial dermis and keeps heat at the level of the sweat glands.

MiraDry

Clinical trials demonstrated an average of 82% reduction of sweat production after two miraDry procedures, each lasting approximately an hour. Two procedures are typically recommended 3 months apart to maximize the results. Published scientific research demonstrates that sweat glands do not come back or regenerate once they have been eliminated. Because the sweat glands do not regenerate, you can expect dramatic and lasting results.

Here at California Dermatology Care in San Ramon, every treatment is customized to each underarm area, with multiple placements of the miraDry handpiece to deliver targeted electromagnetic energy to the underarms.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR MIRADRY TREATMENT

Each procedure appointment will generally last about an hour. There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically clears within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears. If embarrassing underarm outbreaks, stained clothing and constant antiperspirant application are a part of your life, then you may be a good candidate for the miraDry Procedure.

MIRADRY TESTIMONIAL

I have been embarrassed countless times by unsightly sweat marks on my clothing and the foul odor caused by my excessive underarm sweating. When I went to Dr. William Ting’s office to discuss my problems and concerns, he told me about miraDry, a treatment that not only would stop my underarm sweating, but also eliminate any odor. I was so excited to finally have a solution to my life-long embarrassment! The staff that did my procedure were helpful, and explained what to expect after my treatment. I only experienced slight swelling under my arms and a warm sensation for a few days. It has been two months since my procedure, and my underarms are no longer sweaty, nor is there an offensive odor. I feel confident going out wearing clothing I could never wear before, like silk, linen, and sheer cotton. This was a life changing procedure, and words cannot fully express how grateful I am to Dr. Ting and his staff

MIRADRY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the procedure like?

The procedure involves no surgical incisions or cuts. The clinician customizes treatment for each underarm area with multiple placements of the miraDry handpiece. Local anesthesia is administered to the underarms prior to the procedure to maintain comfort. Your office visit appointment will generally last about an hour. Two procedures spaced three months apart are required to maximize the results and duration.

What happens after the procedure?

There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure. Your dermatologist will likely recommend a mild over-the-counter pain medication and use of ice packs for a few days. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically clears within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.

What results can I expect?

Most patients report a dramatic reduction of their sweat – in a recent clinical study, the average sweat reduction was 86%  after two sessions, although most patients experience results they are satisfied with after a single treatment. You should see a reduction in sweat immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.

How long will the results last?

The results are lasting because the sweat glands do not come back or regenerate after they have been eliminated. The miraDry procedure uses a safe, non-invasive technology that is FDA cleared to eliminate sweat glands in the underarm.

Don’t I need my underarm sweat glands?

Your body contains over 4 million sweat glands, with only about 2% located in the underarms. Eliminating this 2% will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself. What parts of my body can the miraDry System treat? The miraDry System is indicated for use of treatment of excessive underarm sweat (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults 18 and over. It cannot be used to treat excessive sweating elsewhere on the body, including the hands and feet.

How is the miraDry procedure different from other treatment options?

Other treatment options are designed to temporarily disable the sweat glands, or involve surgery which contains inherent risks.

Only miraDry provides a lasting solution with a non-invasive procedure. For more information on excessive underarm sweating, visit: International Hyperhidrosis Society www.SweatHelp.org

BOTOX INJECTION FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS)

For hyperhidrosis on palms, feet, forehead or scalp, Dr. Ting recommends botulinum toxin injection as miraDry is not an option for these anatomic areas. BOTOX® is FDA-approved for excessive underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents such as Drysol. Besides underarm areas, Botox has been found to be very helpful for excessive sweating in palms, forehead, etc. BOTOX®treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the excessive sweating stops. You should notice a significant reduction in sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment. BOTOX® treatment is very effective. One clinical study involved 322 patients with excessive underarm sweating. Clinical trials of Botox Cosmetic demonstrate that it can be extremely effective in treating excessive sweating under the arms and on the hands 84 out of 104 BOTOX® treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating—compared to only 44 out of 108 treated without BOTOX® (41%).
